Introduction

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), directly subordinate to the Ministry of Education, is a key university in China, jointly run by the Ministry and Shanghai Municipality. The Continuing Education School (CES), directly under Shanghai Jiao Tong University, offers a wide range of educational programs, among which are part-time programs, full-time programs, bachelor’s program for students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, the international co-operational program, the training center for self-teaching students and the CE training center. With a long-term orientation from 2004 to 2006, the school adheres to the strategy of “developing talents, establishing the brand, enhancing market competition, and cooperating through better communication.”

Shanghai Jiao Tong University has always enjoyed the reputation of being an outstanding institution of higher education. At present, The Continuing Education School (CES) has a total enrollment of over 11,000 undergraduate students for academic credentials and 5000 students for non-credentials on campus.

With a top-flight teaching faculty of over 300 teachers, both full-time and part-time, under the supervision of professors who are well established in their respective areas, CES has set up academic departments such as the department of English, the department of computer science, and the department of business management.

Ever since a structural transformation in 1999, CES has started its programs as an independent entity. In the spirit of “extending development to the outside”, CES has established a new campus on Kaixuan Road with 65 classrooms, all furnished with multimedia facilities and air conditioners, thus creating an ideal study environment for students. Every year this campus receives over 20 visiting professors outside China who cannot help expressing their great acclamation for the advanced teaching facilities of the school.

To meet the demands of the society for compound professional talents with a good command of foreign language skills, CES has started bilingual degree programs since early 2004. To be prepared for this program, 11 full-time teachers were sent over to Leeds University for language training in 2003.

Continuing Education School(CES) is always encouraging its teachers to “revive the nation with better educated people through life-long education”. They are making the best use of modern teaching facilities, improving general teaching quality and trying to establish Premium Courses. Some of the courses being developed include College English, Practical Software, Deng Xiaoping’s Theory and Marketing.

Adhering to the principle of “reviving the nation with better educated people and revitalizing the city with science and education”, CE Training Center of the school has developed a variety of programs to cater to the needs of people of all walks of life.

Ever since 1993, modern educational courses and rationales, teaching staff and resources have been ushered into CES through a series of international co-operational programs with universities and corporations in Japan, Australia, the Great Britain, the United States and Canada, which has paved the new way for better continuing education.

Students have easy access to the school’s website, at which students can look for school information, check the scores, pay the tuition fee and submit homework, etc. The English Workshop affiliated to the website is a logical extension of the classroom instruction and has been recommended to the website of the Ministry of Education at the address of www.sjtuce.net/eclubuni.

With the approval of the Ministry of Education, credential education programs are offered to students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. To achieve better results, CES attaches great importance to maintaining better communication and contact with both the parents and the original schools of these students.

CES enhances quality education and encourages students to take a global view of the world, look ahead into the future and adhere to lofty dreams. CES has developed its own culture, i.e. “The mother river swells only when the streams gush”, “Competition, Innovation, Cooperation and Devotion”. CES encourages the whole teaching staff to be special talents by making constructive and innovative contribution to the development and expansion of the school. “The Network-based Teaching Managing System”, a software package developed by CES and also widely used by other universities, has effectively facilitated the daily administration and reduced the workload of the office administrators and can provide all kinds of service for students as well.
