Conditions

  • USC has:

    well-developed MBA, GCBA and GDBA programs ;

    capacity to offer the program either completely in China or with two subjects offered on campus in Australia.

  • SJTU has:

    excellent academic reputation;

    high technology capabilities;

    access to large numbers of qualified students.

On February 1 2000, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, with the permission from Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, signed an agreement on Combined Education Project at the presence of the third party Australian Chinese Education & Culture (ACEC) acting as the Agent. It is agreed that the Faculty of Business at USC and Adult Education School at SJTU will offer the joint MBA program for managers in or around Great Shanghai area.   The first cohort of 60 students commenced from March 11 2000 and graduated in April 2002.

Special Features of the SJTU-USC MBA

  • The course is designed for working Shanghai business people able to read English who seek: (a) advanced degrees in business; and (b) improved aural-oral English. Goal (a) is central, and goal (b) will be treated as a by-product of its achievement.
  • Face-to-face teaching is to create a ‘learning community’ where teachers and students are able to communicate actively.
  • Emphasis is given to applying business theory by combining traditional textbook study with open-ended, team-based problem solving through case study analysis.
  • Students will meet at SJTU on Saturdays and in between have email access to their teachers and to each other.

Critical thinking and academic rigor as well as an acquaintance with the relevant literature at a level appropriate to postgraduate students are encouraged and required.

Admission criteria

Formal qualifications and work experience

Normally an undergraduate degree from a recognized university and at least 2 years of work experience at or approaching managerial level. However, students with a diploma from a recognized Chinese university, may be admitted if:

. the student has longer work experience, e.g. 3 years or more, AND

. both the Dean of Business at USC and the Dean of Adult Education at SJTU approve.

English level

Students are expected to use less Chinese and more English as the course progresses.

It is particularly important that students’ reading and listening competence in English is high. Before enrolment, students must pass an English test of which both USC and SJTU approve.
