About the Program
Mission Statement
- Foster among Chinese Entrepreneurs a spirit for international business and global
management strategy, as per President Jiang Zemin’s speech of 12 September, 1999.
- Establish an Advanced Business Administration Postgraduate Degree Course program linking
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC).
- High demand in PR China for broad, high-level management training.
- Enhance the strong sister municipality-state relationship, especially in education
exchange sphere between the State of Queensland and Shanghai Municipality.
Conditions
- USC has:
well-developed MBA, GCBA and GDBA programs ;
capacity to offer the program either completely in China or
with two subjects offered on campus in Australia.
- SJTU has:
excellent academic reputation;
high technology capabilities;
access to large numbers of qualified students.
Commencement
On February 1 2000, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of the
Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, with the permission from Shanghai Municipal
Education Commission, signed an agreement on Combined Education Project at the presence of
the third party Australian Chinese Education & Culture (ACEC) acting as the Agent. It
is agreed that the Faculty of Business at USC and Adult Education School at SJTU will
offer the joint MBA program for managers in or around Great Shanghai area. The first cohort
of 60 students commenced from March 11 2000 and graduated in April 2002.
Special Features of the SJTU-USC MBA
- The course is designed for working Shanghai business people able to read English who
seek: (a) advanced degrees in business; and (b) improved aural-oral English. Goal (a) is
central, and goal (b) will be treated as a by-product of its achievement.
- Face-to-face teaching is
to create a ‘learning community’ where teachers and students are able to
communicate actively.
- Emphasis is given to applying business theory by combining traditional textbook study
with open-ended, team-based problem solving through case study analysis.
- Students will meet at SJTU on Saturdays and in between have email access to their
teachers and to each other.
Teaching Methods
MODE ONE (12 subjects taught in China)

USC staff will visit Shanghai regularly for some
lectures delivered live in SJTU.
MODE TWO (2 subjects taught in Australia after 10 in PR China)
face to face classes, where the last two courses are delivered on-campus at
USC.

Duration
To obtain the Certificate of Completion of Advanced Business
Administration Postgraduate Degree Course from SJTU and Master of Business Administration
(MBA) from USC, candidates need to complete the whole ABAPDC program within two years. There
are altogether six sessions in the program with three sessions each year. Each session
lasts three months with two courses offered.
MBA: 6 sessions, assuming students take 2 subjects in each of 3
sessions per year.
GDBA: 4 sessions, using the same assumptions.
GCBA: 2 sessions, using the
same assumptions.
Assessment
The assessment is based on students' classroom participation, assignments
and tests. All these should be done in English. USC will make the assessments according to everyone's performance.
Assignments typically place as much, or more weight on analysis and
problem-solving in students' workplaces as on final examinations. Critical thinking and
academic rigor as well as an acquaintance with the relevant literature at a level
appropriate to postgraduate students are encouraged and required.
Admission criteria
Formal qualifications and work
experience
Normally an undergraduate degree from a recognized university and
at least 2 years of work experience at or approaching managerial level. However, students
with a diploma from a recognized Chinese university, may be admitted if:
. the student has longer work experience, e.g. 3 years or more, AND
. both the Dean of Business at USC and the Dean of Adult Education at
SJTU approve.
English level
Students are expected to use less Chinese and more English as the
course progresses.
It is particularly important that students’ reading and listening competence in
English is high. Before enrolment, students must pass an English test of which both USC
and SJTU approve. |
