a comprehensive set of relating skills

The course will provide several practice exercises so that the concepts are fully integrated.

About Upskilling Parenting Strategies:
Students should not expect to learn from this course cookie-cutter solutions to manage youngsters. Rather, they will learn psychological concepts and a specific set of skills which can be used to improve communication and relationships with children.

Most courses teach philosophies and methods, but this course will focus primarily on PRACTICING the skills as well as learning about them. We will study the current ‘buzz’ words in the field, what they mean, how useful their techniques/methods are known to be, and what’s ‘coming down the pike’ for the future, as well.

The course is designed to allow for presentation of the following topics, and others as participants’ needs indicate (priority/order to be arranged during the first class session):

Alternative family structures and styles, parenting approaches and styles, child/human development, living positively in a fast changing world, cross-cultural challenges, ‘special needs’ youngsters, ‘time outs’ yes or no, specific communication skills, the 4 Cs of successful/effective parenting, I-messaging, behavior-modification and reward/punishment systems, balancing responsibilities and accountabilities, child aggression, parenting for the ‘sandwich’ generation, TV and computer values, effective power-sharing, the most critical factors in successful child-raising, authoritarian vs authoritative styles, giving and getting RESPECT, nutrition and behavior, how much permissiveness is too much, avoiding the negatives, creating win-win, birth order differences, family microenvironments, comparing philosophies, starting/getting/keeping control of you and them early-on, active listening, game theory, conflict resolution, role of critical thinking in child-development, ‘family secrets’, managing stress and anger in the family, growing a positive self-concept and self-esteem, Montessori vs Reggio Emilio vs Steiner vs the rest, developing the child’s personal skills,

Students are welcome to research topics of personal interest with the assistance of the lecturer, or suggest specific topics to be covered in the course.

We know that parenting philosophy and skills are highly teachable and learnable. Parents could make significant changes in their families' lives if they learn, absorb and practice the skills research has shown ‘work’, i.e., are effective in helping us raise happy, healthy, productive, successful responsible youngsters.
