Course outline
This Interactive Design course will give the student the skills
necessary for producing professional web sites.
The course is focused on both the technical and the esthetic side of web
design. Students will learn about HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and
some JavaScript techniques, but also how to design for the web.
Designing for the web is different from designing for print, especially
because web pages are interactive. A professional web designer must not
only make good looking web sites, but also make sure that they are easy
to use. This includes using the right kind of font, making sure that the
navigation is easy to use and structuring the content so that it’s easy
for the user to find the information he/she is looking for.
A professional web designer must also be good at using HTML, CSS and
other techniques to produce the web site. The student will learn HTML
first, before moving on to CSS, which will be used for layouts,
formatting text and more. You will also learn some useful JavaScript
techniques.
During the course, the student will use Photoshop or Illustrator to do
the graphic design for web pages, Imageready for producing optimized
graphics and images for the web and Dreamweaver to produce the web site
using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Some previous knowledge of Photoshop or
Illustrator is an advantage when taking this course, since this will not
be taught during the course.
The student will work on a number of individual projects during the
course. The final project will be to produce a web site from start to
finish.
