Personal Finance and Investment

Teacher: Helen Wang

Course Outline

Finance and investments are not as complicated as they seem to be. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to be a smart investor. As long as you follow a few fundamental practices, your assets will grow over the long haul regardless of market performance.  Those who have lost money in stocks, bonds, or other instruments have the tendency to stop investing.  The end result is they could lose more eventually as the impact of wealth erosion caused by inflation has often been underestimated.

In this course, you will learn:

Why you need to have a financial plan as early as possible

How to build assets

Which assets yield the best risk-adjusted returns

Ways to stay financially disciplined

When to borrow and how much to borrow

Why a home equity line can be a good financial management tool

You can not afford not to invest

Determine if you should work with a financial consultant / planner

How to structure a well balanced portfolio

The differences between stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, REITS, and hedge funds

You can invest in commodities without the downside risk

The advantages and disadvantages of principal protected investments

How to deal with market volatility

Why investors usually end up “Buy High” and “Sell Low”

You are better off in a lower yield, tax-free instrument as a high tax bracket individual

The power of tax-deferred investing

How to protect your assets

80% of the population needs life insurance

When and where to buy life insurance at a discount

Life insurance could be designed to benefit your retirement
